The Big Storm of 2011 !

For once a storm that just about lived up to the hype !! It did indeed snow close to a couple of feet.....and the extremely cold temps have been present ! Of course, up here we were without power for about 30 hours. But, then we're used to it and prepared for it ! Lots of reading yesterday and lots of time stoking the fire. Today I was able to navigate the driveway .....you GO little Subie !......and drove down to the valley to see my oldest friend Belle from Berkeley. I picked my mom up so she could join us and we had a lovely afternoon, actually sitting outside at a Mexican cafe ! It always amazes me the difference in temperatures from up here to down there . I stopped on the way home and picked up some crab.....on sale at Raleys.... and of course some fresh sourdough.....so we're all set for dinner tonight.
It's supposed to be down around 12 degrees here tonight and so I fear for my intrepid lemon bush,,,,,but, then, I can't believe it's lived over 10 years up here. Not really "lemon country" this divide !

Just a Little Late !

Yep........it's here !! The much anticipated storm has finally landed ......full force !! I'll hurry to get this post out since the electricity's been out most of the day and flickers on and off constantly ! I think I may be afflicted with "cabin fever"......I haven't left the house for 4 days .......and it sounds like it'll be a few more before the roads are safe. Jim got out early this morning, but I'll be surprised if he can make it home tonight......even with the trusty 4-Runner ! He hasn't called to say he's stuck somewhere so maybe he'll show up soon ! A warm fire......a hot dinner......and a very lonely wife await !

Roses and a Big Hunk !

Look at these beautiful flowers from my beautiful husband !! All that peachy-yellow splendor AND the luscious chewiness of the awesome Big Hunk !! Never has there been a more perfect union. Oh yeah.......he also presented me with tickets to a lively music performance up in Grass Valley........"[somebody] and the Red Hot Skillet Lickers".......have no idea what's in store for us, but I think we'll be able to handle it !
Cold. windy and gray up here today and a big storm due to hit overnight.....up to a foot of snow here and up to 10 feet a little higher up the road. No doubt I'll be with out power all day tomorrow, but I just checked and have lots of bottled water......since the filtered water system won't work without power......I know, I'm a wuss ! And, tomorrow being a Wednesday it's breakfast for dinner night.....easily prepared on the woodstove, so I guess I'm all set.

Have a Happy Valentine's Day !

Just wanted to get in my Valentine's Day greetings before things get too hectic tomorrow. If you're reading this blog , I probably love you !
It was such a beautiful day today, but storms on the horizon for the next few days.....so we made the most of the sun today. Lot's of work in the garden and on the deck. I think I may even have gotten sunburned. Jenny and I did a little exploring and ,of course, a few minutes of reading in the sun. I have carnitas simmering in the slow cooker so dinner is pretty much taken care of. I really don't know how I survived all these years without a slow cooker.........I highly recommend one !
Hope you're all able to spend tomorrow with someone you love.......enjoy a frivolous holiday .......hearts and flowers all the way ........Spring is right around the corner !

It's My Birthday !!

Wow, what a weekend it's been ! Let's see.......Saturday afternoon Jim and I headed down to Ross and Molly's for a wonderful afternoon of music and some of the best tacos ever. All their "bluegrass" friends were there and the tunes were amazing.....so much talent in one little house ! That night my mom had a lovely dinner for my birthday , or pre-birthday, most of the all of the "local" kids were there and we had such wonderful food ! Of course, we've come to expect no less when dining at Granny's house ! It was such a fun evening.
Yesterday, of course, was Superbowl Sunday and the party moved up here to Lupine Hill. The pigs-in-a-blanket were the big food event of the day.........who could have guessed ??? Lots of music out on the deck....it was sunny and about 70*. It was a pretty good football game......my team won......all-in-all an awesome day.
And then....today....the official birthday......Mom, Molly, Seth and Amanda took me to lunch at a wonderful Thai restaurant in Auburn. Oh, it was so spicy, hot and delicious. Best of all was the company........I've said it before, but I am a most lucky woman !

If At First You Don't Succeed...........!

I think I may have this circular knitting needle thing figured out !! It's only taken a couple of weeks and several sleepless nights.....yes, sleepless nights, I take challenges very seriously ! As usual with these type of difficulties....all of a sudden it made sense to me !! So.......after figuring out the mechanics of circular needles I realized that since I had taught myself what I thought was a knitting stitch, but it was not !! I don't know what stitch, if any, I've been using to knit scarfs, but it sure didn't work when I tried to combine it with a "real" knitting stitch. I guess that's always a danger when you "self-teach" without any guidance. Well.....as I said I think I've made great progress today and am well on my may to a pair of handmade socks ! I hope to have a photo of a finished pair to show you soon.
It was a beautiful day up here so I didn't spend the entire day tangled in yarn. I cleaned up my flower garden a bit ........visions of bright and happy flowers sprouting up soon. However, I'm sure we're still at least 3 months away from sprouting flowers.
For dinner tonight I'm trying to resurrect a roast I way overcooked on Sunday. Seems counter intuitive to recook an overcooked roast, but I've thrown it in the crockpot with a bunch of mushrooms, onions and 1/2 a bottle of red wine. The thought being that the meat will become tender, moist and tasty. Whatever....at the least the noodles will be yummy !
